There's a horseshoe over the front door of my house. And it has been over every front door that I've had, since long before I started this brand. It sits prongs-facing-up.
The lore of the horseshoe is long debated, but the version I believe is this: it represents luck and protection, and the prongs should be facing up. Point them down and the luck runs right out of the shoe. Point them up and it collects - a little cup of good fortune hanging over the threshold, gathering the blessings instead of letting them slip away.
It's something I don't think about all that often, but every now and again I notice it as I leave the house. I find myself feeling the tiniest bit of gratitude for all the luck and protection it has brought to my own life.
So when I sat down to figure out the mark for Saddle & Roam, I kept coming back to it. Look closely and you'll find an S and an R folded into the curve. Every bag that leaves this shop carries one. Prongs up. Carrying a little luck in reserve, in case you need it.
